NAS setup in Vienna: Synology, QNAP and TrueNAS

A NAS is the heart of many small companies: documents, images, accounting and backups live there. All the more important that it is set up correctly. I install Synology, QNAP and TrueNAS on site in Vienna, configure RAID, user permissions and shares and make sure a backup exists outside the device.

As an operator of distributed storage platforms I know where the typical mistakes are: RAID is not a backup, snapshots need rules, and remote access belongs behind a VPN instead of an open port forward.

What is included

  • Advice on device, disks and RAID level matching data volume and resilience
  • Installation and basic configuration, firmware updates, notifications on disk errors
  • Users, groups and shares (SMB, NFS, WebDAV) with a clean permission concept
  • Snapshots with retention rules as protection against accidental deletion and ransomware
  • Backup to a second NAS, external disk or encrypted to the cloud (Hetzner Storage Box, Backblaze, S3)
  • Secure remote access via VPN (WireGuard) instead of open ports, two-factor authentication
  • Integration with workstations, printers, scanners and backup software
  • Documentation and training for your team

Typical assignments

  • A tax consultancy replaces USB drives with a Synology NAS with snapshots and cloud backup.
  • An architecture office needs fast access to large project files and an offsite backup.
  • An existing NAS is full and slow: expansion, reorganisation and backup concept.
  • After a disk failure the question is how safe the data really was, then the NAS is set up properly.

Process

  1. Request

Within one business day you receive an assessment with effort, price and a proposed date.

  3. Implementation

I do the work personally, remotely via secured access or on site, and keep you updated throughout.

  4. Handover and invoice

Documented handover, then an invoice from KernelHost GmbH with convenient payment via kernelhost.com.

Questions about this service

Synology, QNAP or TrueNAS?

Synology is the easiest choice for most companies with a strong backup ecosystem, QNAP offers more hardware for the money, TrueNAS is ideal when ZFS and maximum control are required. I advise vendor-neutrally.

Is RAID enough as a backup?

No. RAID only protects against the failure of individual disks, not against deletion, ransomware, theft or fire. That is why every setup includes a backup outside the device.

Can I access the NAS while travelling?

Yes, securely via a VPN that I set up on your firewall or the NAS. I deliberately avoid open ports to the internet.

Service area: Vienna and the surrounding area (Klosterneuburg, Korneuburg, Schwechat, Mödling, Perchtoldsdorf, Purkersdorf).
